Chapter 88 Ambiguity
"Moreover, in our profession, the most important purpose is to heal the sick and save lives. Yet you, on a mere whim and without understanding, made a bet with someone else. How can that be justified?" Director Zhang bowed his head, not daring to respond.
"As a doctor, what matters most? Medical ethics! Let me make this clear: if you dare to question others without cause again, or if you give this young friend any more trouble, the doors of Renji Hall will never open to you again."
Director Zhang was immediately seized by panic, terrified of offending this venerable old physician. He quickly turned to Ye Fei and said, "I'm sorry, I was rash. I shouldn't have mocked you. You truly have the skill to save lives."
Ye Fei cast him a cool glance, choosing not to dwell on it.
Meanwhile, Li Yueyao's parents exchanged astonished glances, their faces full of disbelief.
It had been less than twenty minutes, and their son had already recovered?
And this man—Director Zhang, a renowned academician in Jiangnan Province's medical field—was willing to swallow his pride and apologize humbly?
This was Director Zhang's own hospital, after all! If any passing nurses saw this, wouldn't he lose all his usual authority?
As Li Yueyao let out a sigh of relief, a faint smile curved her lips. The gloom in her heart was swept away; seeing Ye Fei treated with such respect made her genuinely happy.
Ye Fei considered for a moment. "I won't hold your rudeness against you, but a lost bet is a lost bet. You must pay for Xiaolong's medical and hospitalization fees."
Director Zhang nodded repeatedly. "Of course, I will cover everything! Furthermore, due to my negligence and misdiagnosis, which put the patient in danger, I will personally offer an additional one hundred thousand yuan as compensation for nutrition and psychological distress. What do you think?"
Li Yueyao's parents were even more stunned.
A hundred thousand yuan was no small sum for them.
It was already a great blessing that their son could be cured. Now, not only did they not have to pay a cent, they would actually receive a hundred thousand yuan for free!
And all of this was thanks to the young man before them.
"Since Director Zhang is sincere, Uncle, Auntie, you should accept," Ye Fei said mildly, seeing the two of them standing in a daze. "There's no need to be polite."
"Yes, yes, of course," Li Yueyao's mother replied, her face alight with smiles, the previous coldness gone without a trace.
After that, under Director Zhang's arrangements, Li Xiaolong underwent a series of checkups. Once it was confirmed that he was in no serious danger, Feng Jiren personally reminded Ye Fei to call him so they could exchange knowledge about alchemy.
Ye Fei readily agreed; the so-called alchemy method was something anyone could learn. The crucial element was infusing spiritual energy to aid the formation of the pills. Without that, one could at best produce some ordinary medicines.
Director Zhang then went to arrange Li Xiaolong's discharge and prepare the compensation.
He was willing to make such a promise only to win Old Feng's favor. Unfortunately, he did not realize that after today's events, he would never set foot in Renji Hall for the rest of his life.
Li Yueyao's parents thanked Ye Fei profusely, feeling uneasy for having underestimated him before. Ye Fei, of course, did not take it to heart. After a brief exchange, he prepared to leave.
"Yueyao, quickly see Mr. Ye off," Li Yueyao's father urged.
Li Yueyao nodded and went downstairs with Ye Fei.
"That Ye Fei, so young and already so capable—he's truly extraordinary!"
"Earlier, we shouted at him. He won't hold it against us, will he?"
"It's fine. With Yueyao's connection to him, even if there are any disagreements, we can always work them out."
"Yueyao isn't so young anymore. Why don't we just decide to marry her off? At least we could get a decent bride price."
As they watched Ye Fei drive away, Li Yueyao's parents continued to sing his praises, looking at him with growing approval, as if they were in-laws sizing up a future son-in-law—finding him more and more pleasing to the eye.
Li Yueyao had no inkling that, because of this incident, her parents were already planning to use her to secure a handsome bride price from Ye Fei.
She sat in the back seat, gazing at Ye Fei's sideburns, and said softly, "Ye Fei, I never expected you to have such medical skills. You're truly remarkable. I don't think anyone in this world is more impressive than you!"
"Don't let past things trouble you. If Sun Shiyun knew how amazing you are, she would never have treated you so coldly!"
Ye Fei chuckled. "That's nothing. I actually have a nickname—the Master of Gynecology. If you're ever feeling unwell, you can come to me anytime. If I can't cure you, I won't charge a penny!"
Li Yueyao's cheeks flushed, but she ignored his remark and said instead, "My family has always been that way. Now that they know about my connection to you, they definitely won't let it go easily."
"It doesn't matter," Ye Fei replied with a smile. "Your parents aren't bad people."
Li Yueyao beamed. "You haven't eaten, have you? How about this—I bought a lot of groceries at home. Why don't you come over and let me cook for you as a thank you?"
"Sounds great," Ye Fei nodded, just in time to realize he was hungry.
"What would you like to eat?" Li Yueyao asked.
"Anything—just make whatever you're good at," Ye Fei replied. "Is your cooking any good?"
"It's delicious! It really is!" Li Yueyao nodded vigorously, her eyes shining with admiration as she looked at Ye Fei.
...
The two of them made their way to Li Yueyao's place, but as soon as they reached the entrance, Ye Fei was taken aback.
"University?" He looked at Li Yueyao, puzzled. "You live in a university dormitory?"
"Of course!" Li Yueyao answered innocently. "Didn't I tell you? I'm a university lecturer. What's so strange about living in the dorms?"
"I thought you'd live in some high-end apartment or something," Ye Fei replied, rubbing his nose. In his mind, anyone who knew Sun Shiyun would surely be wealthy.
"I do have two apartments outside, but they haven't been handed over yet," Li Yueyao said with a smile. "Besides, living on campus is convenient for teaching, and the school gave me a single dormitory. Come on, I'll show you."
With that, she linked her arm through Ye Fei's.
The casual gesture sent a jolt through Ye Fei.
Damn.
Could this girl be falling for me?
He considered it, then grinned without shaking her off.
I'm still as charming as ever.
"Why are you smiling like that?" Li Yueyao gave him a strange look.
"It's nothing, nothing," Ye Fei chuckled.
The two had just entered the school gates when a group of athletic students exercising on the field nearby caught sight of them.
"Hey, Brother Zhou, look! Isn't that the Li teacher you pine after day and night? What's she doing with some loser?"
A rather skinny student shouted.
"Oh?"
Beside him, a tall man known as Brother Zhou squinted in their direction.
He happened to catch sight of Ye Fei, arm-in-arm with Li Yueyao, walking toward the faculty apartments.
"Damn!"
"Since when did Li teacher get a boyfriend?"
"It's over—a cabbage has been taken by a pig!"
"Brother Zhou, looks like you've lost out in love this time!"
A few of the cronies jeered.
"Shut up!" Zhou Nandong gritted his teeth, clenching his fists as he glared at Ye Fei's slight frame. "Damn it, trying to steal my woman? Courting death!"
With that, he waved his hand.
"Let's go!"
"Come with me and check this out!"
At once, a group of athletes surged forward, surrounding Ye Fei.
