Chapter 77: Despicable Tactics
Wan Jun was suddenly startled by the icy look in Ye Fei’s eyes, but he forced himself to remain composed.
“Wan Jun, let’s order,” Chen Yu said helplessly, worried Wan Jun would accidentally anger Ye Fei, and could only change the subject.
Even as she spoke, her gaze kept drifting toward Ye Fei.
For some reason, when Ye Fei had spoken just now, there had been an indescribable aura of severity about him, as if he were a true soldier.
Compared to what Wan Jun had said, she clearly trusted Ye Fei more.
But since Wan Jun was her subordinate, she had to give him some face.
The three of them began to order.
Wan Jun, ever the gentleman, turned to Chen Yu and asked, “Yu’er, what would you like to eat?”
“Just order something simple,” Chen Yu replied with a light smile.
Wan Jun was about to order when a thought suddenly struck him. He glanced at Ye Fei and asked, “Cousin Jiang, what would you like? Order anything. I’m not sure what Yu’er’s tastes are either.”
Wan Jun sneered inwardly. Ye Fei clearly looked like a penniless good-for-nothing. He probably didn’t even know what was on the menu at a top French restaurant like this.
Now that he had to order, let’s see how he managed.
“Oh? Are you sure I can order whatever I like?” Ye Fei raised an eyebrow. “You’re paying, right?”
“Of course, go ahead!” Wan Jun waved his hand generously.
A playful smile tugged at Ye Fei’s lips. Under the watchful eyes of everyone, he fluently ordered in French, pointing to the dishes on the menu and saying to the foreign waiter beside him, “Foie gras, oyster cups, baked escargot, Marengo chicken, Meunière chicken, truffle soup, sirloin steak, bouillabaisse, and eight bottles of 1998 Château Haut-Brion. That’s all.”
Buzz.
Wan Jun’s mind went blank.
Damn!
He could never have imagined Ye Fei would speak French, and so fluently!
Chen Yu looked at Ye Fei in disbelief as well, stunned that his accent was every bit as authentic as a native Frenchman’s.
This made her suddenly aware of a troubling thought.
Ye Fei’s past was becoming more and more unfathomable.
Even the French waiter couldn’t help but glance at Ye Fei several times, surprised both by his fluent French and the dishes he ordered. They were all famous French delicacies, and none of them cheap. Most astonishing of all, he had ordered eight bottles of 1998 Château Haut-Brion!
One bottle alone was equivalent to half a month’s turnover for the restaurant!
Of course, Wan Jun had no idea what Ye Fei had ordered.
First, he didn’t know a word of French; he was just putting on airs.
Second, when Ye Fei had been ordering, he’d been so shocked he felt as if his face had been slapped hard.
What the hell...
Wasn’t Ye Fei supposed to be a country bumpkin?
Wan Jun instinctively glanced at Chen Yu and saw the same look of astonishment in her eyes.
“Xiao Wan, do you know what I just ordered?” Ye Fei looked at Wan Jun and asked with a smile.
“What?” Seeing the smile on Ye Fei’s face, Wan Jun’s heart skipped a beat, a sense of foreboding creeping in.
He forced a smile, turned to the waiter, and awkwardly said two French words, “Price?”
The waiter paused, then handed Wan Jun the marked menu and showed him the total on the ordering device.
When he saw what Ye Fei had chosen, Wan Jun’s mouth twitched, and he nearly fell out of his chair, his face turning green with rage.
Foie gras, oyster cups, baked escargot, Marengo chicken, Meunière chicken, truffle soup...
What the hell?!
How could every dish be this expensive?
The worst was the wine—each bottle of Haut-Brion cost 150,000, and Ye Fei had ordered eight!
“Xiao Wan, what’s with that expression? Don’t tell me you’re upset. You told me to order whatever I wanted!” Ye Fei said earnestly. “No money? If you don’t have enough, just say so. My sister can pay for you!”
Wan Jun was beside himself with regret, forcing out a smile uglier than a grimace. “No, it’s fine, nothing to be upset about. It’s just half a month’s salary for me. I’m just worried you’ve ordered too much, and it’ll go to waste!”
“Don’t worry, Xiao Wan. When I was doing farm work, I could eat ten bowls of rice by myself. I’ll finish it all!” Ye Fei added, “And if I can’t, I’ll pack it for my fellow villagers who haven’t eaten yet.”
Wan Jun clenched his fists so tightly he almost flipped the table and stormed out.
But in the end, he restrained himself, because the woman he adored was right in front of him.
He told himself to stay calm, no matter what happened; if he didn’t get back at Ye Fei tonight, he’d no longer be Wan Jun.
“Yu’er, I’m going to the restroom for a moment. Excuse me.”
Wan Jun rose, hands in his pockets, and turned away with a cool air.
Watching his trembling shoulders, Chen Yu glanced helplessly at Ye Fei. “Why did you order so much, and pick the most expensive things? You’re clearly setting him up.”
“Didn’t you see how eager he was to embarrass me? I’m just turning the tables on him; isn’t that fair?” Ye Fei chuckled. “Don’t tell me you’re jealous?”
Chen Yu rolled her eyes at Ye Fei, but something inside her was suddenly touched.
Though Ye Fei still wore his usual playful grin, she suddenly found him unfamiliar.
Faced with Wan Jun, a graduate of a prestigious university and a perfect gentleman, Ye Fei hadn’t responded with brashness, but with quiet cleverness.
In a top French restaurant, he’d felt no pressure at all, even speaking French more fluently than a native.
This Ye Fei...
What kind of story did he carry behind him?
....
In the restroom,
Wan Jun found the restaurant’s floor manager, handed him a pill, and said, “Dissolve this in the wine later. If anything happens, I’ll take responsibility.”
“Brother Jun, what is this?”
“Relax, it’s not poison, just a strong laxative.”
“All right, but you’ll have to put in a good word for me with the boss.”
“No problem, leave it to me.”
The manager, knowing Wan Jun’s close relationship with the boss, agreed to this small favor.
With enough profit, ignoring one’s conscience was just a matter of blinking.
Once everything was arranged, Wan Jun’s expression twisted into a cold smile as he muttered, “Let’s see how you handle this, brat.”
...
When he returned to the table, Wan Jun’s embarrassment was gone and he appeared every bit the gentleman once more.
Soon, two waiters began serving course after course of costly dishes, and Wan Jun’s eyes flashed with renewed malice.
Ye Fei, of course, noticed the change in him.
When the eight bottles of Haut-Brion were brought out, Wan Jun immediately signaled the waiter to open them all and personally poured a glass for Ye Fei.
Ye Fei narrowed his eyes, a faint blue gleam flickering in their depths. He frowned ever so slightly and then smiled coldly to himself.
