Chapter Eighty-Eight: He Is So Terrifying!
“Could it belong to someone else?” He arched a brow, speaking with lazy ease.
The look on his face made it obvious he had already decided it was his, so he did not even bother to doubt it.
But I glanced at him with a slightly troublesome air and muttered, “Of course not. What if it really belongs to someone else?”
“Then that would be fine.” He smiled. “If you give birth to anything other than a Qiongqi, I’ll soak you in a vat and eat you like pickles.”
“A vat-pickled cat...?” His words made me laugh despite myself. “What if I give birth to a human baby?”
He smiled again. “Your genes won’t be stronger than mine.”
“Uh.” I was completely speechless. This fellow even understood genes. How rare.
But thinking about it, it made sense. I had seen him playing on a tablet before, which proved that he seemed to know a little about the modern world. He was only somewhat dull when it came to matters of love and affection.
I began to wonder what my child and Forget River’s would look like.
At first, I had been more curious whether Fish Treasure and Dawn Mist’s child would be a little cat with wings.
But now, having never seen Forget River’s true form, I could only imagine based on that statue.
Thinking back, I really had been foolish. I had clung to that statue and chattered away at it about everything, as though I had truly taken him for my husband.
I was almost certain now that he was Forget River.
So my child would also be a small Qiongqi with a mighty, imposing appearance?
Since he said his genes were stronger, did that mean the child would look exactly like him?
After lingering on the subject for a while, I suddenly remembered the matter of our relationship, and so I asked hesitantly, “Master... I... what status am I supposed to have when I bear your child?” I even blushed a little after saying it, waiting for him to say he would marry me, or at least promise that I would be the only woman in his life.
“What status?” Forget River frowned, answering without hesitation. “My cat.”
“Your cat?” I froze. “Just that? No different from any other cat?”
“What’s the problem?”
I drew a deep breath and climbed out of his arms. “You don’t plan to marry me?”
“Why would I marry you?”
“You’re not going to marry me? Then why would I have your child?”
Forget River said nothing, as if considering the connection between those words.
“If there’s no marriage, then there can be no children.” He repeated the words with faint surprise.
“Yes! Most humans are like that! If they aren’t married, they won’t have children for the other person! At the very least, give me some proper standing, will you? What kind of thing is it to be a pet?”
“But I am not human.”
“You’re not! But I am! If you want me, then you should marry me according to human custom!”
“Are you thinking too much?” he said with a frown, as though he had never even considered marriage.
And the meaning of that was even more infuriating: was he saying I wanted to marry because I was overthinking it?
“You’re the one who isn’t thinking enough!” His indifferent attitude made me feel utterly dismissed, and I immediately started getting angry. “Even that King of the Three Netherworlds gave me the status of a fiancée. I’m only your cat, so why should I bear your child? I might as well go find someone else!”
As the saying goes, once the wound has healed, one forgets the pain.
When Forget River and I were arguing like that, I truly had not paid attention to the problem with my words.
But after the storm had passed, I once looked back and thought about it.
At the time, those words really were spoken wrongly by me, which was why all the chaotic events that followed were drawn out.
Because every one of those events was like a land mine buried around me. If I moved even slightly, I did not know which one would explode, and then I would lose everything, shattered beyond repair.
I did not regret bringing trouble about, but I did regret saying those things then.
Yet when people quarrel in anger, they often do not know what their words sound like in the other person’s ears. They are only busy being angry themselves.
Or perhaps I truly did not understand him at all. I had tried to use my own human way of thinking to change the thoughts of a fierce beast, and I had done so with such a fiery attitude. Failing was only natural.
So in that way, just after making up with Forget River, I pulled away from his arms and once again began agonizing over the question of marriage.
Forget River’s gaze suddenly turned cold. Perhaps it was not because I was being unreasonable, nor because I was making a scene about marriage, but because I had mentioned Hades within my words and, in another way, seemed to be praising him.
I only realized afterward, once I had returned to the cat’s nest, that I had been wrong. But at the time I did not know, so I kept arguing.
“I don’t want to bear your child anymore! I’m not having it! Take it away, I don’t want it!”
I shouted furiously, like every other woman who believes that once she is pregnant, the other person will care for her a little more.
Because he did not value me at all! He would not even marry me! So I was furious!
Why should I suffer the pain of carrying his child for him? Why should I endure the agony of giving birth for him? He would not even marry me!
Those were the only thoughts in my head then, as though I had been brainwashed. I even felt hurt because he would not marry me, and then accused me of overthinking!
Forget River frowned and asked me, “You mean that seriously? You do not want it?”
I was already in too deep to retreat, and furious beyond reason, so I nodded hard. “I mean it! I don’t want it!”
It was only after a long silence that Forget River finally said, “Very well...”
Then he rose and came toward me step by step.
Only then did I begin to panic. Only then did I start to understand that perhaps I had been thinking about it the wrong way, and why the man before me had suddenly agreed to my request.
My heart pounding like a drum, I watched him approach step by step. In the end, just as before, I was pressed back against the wall.
His hand rested on my lower abdomen, where his child was growing.
“Really do not want it.”
Forget River’s voice was calm and without ripples.
There was not even the shape of a question in it, as though he were asking himself.
To be honest, by then I had already begun to feel afraid.
I did not know what he was going to do. He was not like ordinary humans.
He was a fierce beast. When his hand stroked my stomach, I still told myself he surely would not harm our child.
After all, when he had been angry just moments before, he had only used a thin stick to strike me; he had not touched me with his hands.
Perhaps because, if he had used his hands, he might not have been able to control his strength in anger and might have hurt me, I drew myself up and answered with a single word.
“Yes...”
As though the whole world had fallen silent, his hand suddenly grew hot.
“What are you doing!”
In panic, I instinctively tried to step back, but the wall was behind me, and I could do nothing at all.
I stared helplessly as red light flickered in his hand, and then my stomach suddenly became scorching hot as well, as if a lump of charcoal had been set inside it!
“Ahhh—!”
I clutched my stomach and cried out in pain, feeling as though something had just... fallen out?
Fallen out?!
Had it melted away inside my body?!
Was it the child?!
I stared at Forget River in shock, my eyes widening, unable to believe this was happening to me.
“What did you do...?” I was so stunned that my voice was almost gone.
“As you wished.” Forget River smiled, but the smile was strangely hollow.
“You... you...”
Breathing hard, I held my stomach, unable to accept it!
He had caused me to lose our child? Just like that?
Had I really been pregnant? And now had he ended it?
The small Qiongqi I had been imagining a moment ago would never appear?
I stood there, dumbstruck, staring at Forget River, not knowing what I was thinking anymore.
A mess of confusion swirled together with a splitting headache, buzzing and roaring in my ears.
Only when Forget River’s icy words came again did I understand.
“You do not need to bear children for me anymore. You may go and do whatever you wish. From now on, you need not return here.”
After that, he turned and left, not leaving me a single chance to speak.
I watched him go in a daze, blinking, and everything before me seemed like a dream.
Had it all been a dream ever since I lost my underwear?
When would I wake up?
When I woke, would he still be by my side?
Many times, when women quarrel with men, they begin to regret it the moment the man turns away.
But my stubbornness kept me from calling out, and I did not even know how to call him back.
What right did he have to take away my child?
Because... I said I did not want it?
I was utterly stunned. Only after several little cats came over to me, quite rudely helped me to my feet, and sent me back to the guardian cats’ nest did I finally learn the whole beginning, and the whole ending, of the matter.
