Chapter Ninety-Five: Rita’s Raid
At the frontline recruit training camp, the heroine drove a military vehicle straight to the information center.
That was where all the progress of recruit training was recorded. If one needed a soldier’s file, there was no faster place to look.
“Sergeant, it is a pleasure to meet you.”
As always, the information center was run by two logistics women. Seeing that the unexpected visitor was none other than the Angel of Verdun, the famed war hero, they were visibly excited.
The heroine remained composed. “Girls, I need your help. I have an urgent mission, and I need to check the state of the recruit camp. Could you show me the latest training roster?”
“Of course!”
Without the slightest hesitation, one of the women took out a compact tablet and rapidly entered a string of commands before opening the newest training list.
She handed it over. The heroine scanned it quickly, and her expression changed subtly.
“Thank you for your cooperation.”
“It is our honor to serve you!”
Back in the vehicle, the mechanic sitting in the passenger seat hurriedly asked, “How is it?”
“Only two people in the entire recruit training camp were marked as deserters. After I revived, someone still saw those two, but afterward they vanished completely. No one knows how they left the camp, and no one knows where they are now.”
“Damn it! The time-space anomaly is real! Rita, you can’t keep— Damn it, listen to me finish!”
Before the mechanic could finish, the heroine simply pulled out her pistol and shot herself through the head.
The world shifted. Everything began again.
When she opened her eyes, the heroine waited quietly for more than a minute, but the terrifying robot did not appear again.
She considered this for a moment, then suddenly called out, “Terror Robot Unit, confirm my identity!”
At once, a scanning beam shot out from the corner of the wall, swiftly verifying the heroine’s identity. Then a terror robot disguised as an ammunition crate reverted to its true form, unfolding its dreadful eight claws and striding forward.
A mechanical voice followed.
“Identity confirmed. Temporary commander. Temporary holder of highest authority. Data source unknown. Authority locked.”
“Commander, what secret do you have?”
The heroine said solemnly, “Good. So you do know who I am. Where is the rampaging beastman unit?”
A holographic screen appeared before her. A vast tract of land inside the occupied zone turned blue, standing out starkly amid the surrounding red.
“The rampaging beastman unit has undergone unknown changes. Their numbers have exceeded three hundred twenty-five thousand. Commander, do you have any orders to issue?”
“Relay my command. Have the treant unit move toward our position. Fire is authorized. If any alien monster tries to attack, tear them apart!”
“Yes, sir!”
“And what about the terror robots? Are there any stationed in the recruit training camp?”
“Yes. Thirty-five units are currently hidden there.”
The heroine nodded in satisfaction. “Good. From this moment on, keep a close watch on those two. The instant they show any sign of fleeing, launch an attack at once. Do not spare anyone else.”
“Yes, Commander!”
After issuing a few simple orders, the heroine drove to the logistics department. She still needed to explain the whole chain of events to the mechanic once more.
Though the heroine had long since been exhausted by this process, it was an unavoidable tedium in the service of saving the world.
Fortunately, through repeated retellings and endless explanations, her story had gained considerable persuasive force, and it was becoming easier and easier to convince the mechanic.
With the matter of the mechanic dealt with, she took him with her and stormed out of the camp in the military vehicle.
Meanwhile, in another place, the wolf-toed potato appeared once again among the recruits with a numb expression. The black chimpanzee’s enormous face swayed in his field of view, and the two of them could not even be bothered to get angry anymore.
After being tossed back and forth more than a hundred times, anyone would break.
Fine. They could endure. As long as they survived this meaningless stream of nonsense, they would be free.
Even if that freedom meant only hiding underground to train their martial arts.
Wolf-Toed Potato was utterly speechless at this bizarre mission world.
Edge of Tomorrow, Edge of Tomorrow—would it have killed them to just follow the plot properly?
That was Tom Cruise!
If the cheat had to be given to anyone, why the hell was it placed on the heroine instead of the hero? Come on, this is the Edge of Tomorrow mission world, not the prequel. Could you please get that straight?
But complaints were complaints. The plot would not change in the slightest.
The mission was a joke, but unless the heroine was eliminated, even if the hero died a hundred times, the mission would never succeed.
It was practically a different kind of invincible cheat: impossible to kill no matter what.
How was anyone supposed to clear this mission?
And her will was far too hard as well.
After crashing into her over and over more than a hundred times without even blinking, did her high rank and freedom of movement make her untouchable? Fine, yes, it did.
Wolf-Toed Potato had already accepted his fate. In their eyes, this mission world was finished.
They wanted to kill the heroine today, but she would never give them the chance. She recognized only the world line in her own eyes; the moment anyone appeared who did not belong, she would not hesitate to put a bullet through herself.
The repeated failures had already proven that point beyond doubt.
Potato was furious. In his view, the opposing team had taken a monstrous advantage. In this mission world, they only needed to hide somewhere safe like turtles.
As long as they stayed in their shell until the plot ended, they would receive the mission-clear reward. It was practically free loot.
That left him deeply unbalanced.
He had thought it would be another ordinary cycle, and both of them were already preparing to slip away through the earth, when a variable appeared without warning.
The heroine drove her military vehicle straight into recruit training.
She was wearing exoskeletal armor, fully armed, and behind the vehicle trailed two neat lines of terror robots, following closely behind.
The moment she appeared, the heroine opened fire without hesitation, sending a rocket into the ranks of the recruits and blasting the orderly formation into chaos.
The chimpanzee instructor was stunned.
Staring at the scene of misery and groans spread across the ground, he did not know what to say.
Just then, a giant wolf dropped from the sky, with a recruit still clamped in its jaws.
The heroine’s eyes lit up. “A time-space anomaly. It really is the two of you! Terror Robot Unit, execute the purge order!”
No sooner had she spoken than dozens of massive mechanical spiders emerged, surrounding the werewolf and the cluster of recruits who had not managed to flee.
They lunged forward without hesitation, using their claws and the short-barreled guns mounted on their bodies to relentlessly hunt down Wolf-Toed Potato.
In the sweep, collateral casualties were inevitable. Quite a few soldiers who could not escape in time were cut in two.
The sudden bloody scene terrified the recruits half to death. They stumbled and crawled toward the outside, some so frightened they even lost their trousers.
Seeing the terror robots, Potato turned pale with shock. “Boss, we’re in trouble! The heroine has teamed up with the enemy!”
