Chapter 61: A Significant Connection
“Wu Ya...”
Watching Wu Ya’s resolute figure as he walked away, Liu Qian stood rooted to the spot in a daze.
He just left.
Carrying with him a belly full of indignation.
And surely, there must have been a fair amount of contempt mixed in as well!
A peddler?
The status her parents always thought so distinguished—
What did that mean now in Wu Ya’s eyes?
How laughable.
Still flaunting their wealth before him!
“Look! Just look at that! What kind of person is he? Indeed, the poor are always poor! Not a shred of manners, no upbringing at all! If he wants to leave, let him—there’s no need for such an attitude!”
Lin Yongfen immediately jumped up, pointing at the already closed door, unleashing a torrent of curses.
Liu Mingli’s face had long since darkened like storm clouds.
“Hmph! A toad can never become a frog! So, don’t expect his skin to ever be smooth! In fact, the more he acts like this, the better! Let our girl see clearly the boyfriend she’s so determined to defend! Uncouth, lacking all sense of decorum!”
The couple, one after the other, vented their deep disdain in their anger.
Yet, deep down, a note of satisfaction flickered in both their hearts.
Clearly, the boy minded their attitude.
Though he hadn’t said outright that he wasn’t worthy of Liu Qian,
His departure alone showed he already felt inferior.
He had begun to feel ashamed.
He could see the chasm between himself and Liu Qian, as wide as the heavens!
That was good!
Letting him retreat in the face of difficulty was far easier than breaking up young lovers by force.
“Nannan, you see it now, don’t you? This is his attitude! Clearly unqualified, yet he makes no effort to improve! Facing our challenge, instead of standing his ground, he just turns and leaves! Is a friendship so easily abandoned even worth treasuring?”
Liu Mingli turned to his daughter.
No matter how much was said, he needed to get through to her.
Wu Ya slamming the door and leaving—wasn’t that the perfect chance for his daughter to be disappointed in him?
“Yes, Nannan, a man who can’t even shoulder this much responsibility—who retreats at the first difficulty—how can he ever be relied upon? Seeing his true character now is the best thing that could happen to you.”
Lin Yongfen chimed in.
The couple exchanged knowing glances, sharing a secret smile.
Surely now, their daughter would give up.
At the crucial moment, the one she defended so fiercely had walked away without a backward glance.
As for her?
He cared not at all.
Her effort, her defiance,
Her determined support for him,
Even her willingness to turn against her parents for his sake—
All of it had vanished into thin air with his departure.
All her efforts wasted.
Including her feelings!
With someone so irresponsible, how could their daughter possibly remain devoted?
Impossible!
Their daughter was no fool!
Yet, just as the couple congratulated themselves, feigning outrage,
And were gently trying to guide Liu Qian away from her disappointment...
“Dad, you were in the branch’s trading hall yesterday. You must know about that mysterious figure who topped the list, right?”
Liu Qian suddenly spoke, inexplicably.
It seemed to come from nowhere, with no apparent relevance.
Especially since it had nothing to do with the current situation!
Liu Mingli was momentarily at a loss.
“That mysterious figure? Of course I know! But I have no idea who he actually is—yet he had the nerve to buy so heavily when individual bonds were at a low! Just that courage alone earns my admiration!”
Shaking his head, Liu Mingli couldn’t help but praise from the heart.
His expression, his manner,
Spoke of deep regret at not having the chance to befriend such a remarkable person!
“Nannan, why are you suddenly asking about that? This has nothing to do with Wu Ya! Bring your mind back to yourself and think it over!”
Liu Mingli was still confused, and Lin Yongfen even more so.
The family had been talking about Wu Ya.
Why bring up some mysterious figure out of the blue?
What did that have to do with their family?
Utterly baffling!
In Lin Yongfen’s mind, her daughter’s sudden change of topic was just a ploy to distract them and avoid delving further into the matter.
That wouldn’t do!
Today, they had to strike while the iron was hot,
And completely extinguish whatever lingering hope she harbored for Wu Ya!
But—
“Heh, Mom, you’re wrong! That mysterious figure isn’t unrelated to Wu Ya. In fact... he’s intimately connected!”
Intimately connected!
Boom!
Liu Qian’s words struck like a bolt of lightning,
Shocking Liu Mingli out of his reverie.
What had his daughter just said?
That the mysterious figure was closely connected to Wu Ya?
Intimately connected!
The meaning was plain.
Wu Ya’s friend, or even a relative!
All this time, he had been desperate to befriend that person.
Yet—
The ladder had been set before him, only for him to kick it away himself!
Blind to gold when it’s right before his eyes!
“Nannan, is that mysterious figure Wu Ya’s friend, or a relative? Was it this mysterious person who advised him and helped revive his family’s tailor shop?”
In his anxiety, Liu Mingli fired off two key questions.
“Who is this mysterious person you’re talking about?” Lin Yongfen asked, seeing her husband’s changed expression.
Mysterious figure?
She’d thought her daughter was just changing the subject earlier,
So hadn’t given it much thought.
But this person truly existed,
And made her husband’s face change the moment he heard about him,
Impatient to know more.
Such a person must be extraordinary!
Given her husband’s shrewdness, he would never be moved by just anyone, or even by someone of modest accomplishment.
At most, he might show some idle curiosity.
If a connection could be made, fine; if not, he would never force it.
But now, this person had unsettled her husband.
Lin Yongfen’s interest was piqued.
“Our daughter’s mysterious figure is the one who made a splash in the branch yesterday—using just twenty thousand as a base, he turned it into three hundred thousand in a single morning!”
Twenty thousand turned into three hundred thousand?
Lin Yongfen’s mind reeled.
A wave of dizziness nearly toppled her.
Three hundred thousand.
Even for all their supposed glory, it would take years of hard work to earn that much—
And that, only if they never spent a penny.
Yet this man?
He pocketed it in a single morning.
To call such a person a legend would be to sell the word short!
But then...
“Mom, Dad, that mysterious figure isn’t Wu Ya’s friend, nor his relative. He is Wu Ya himself!”
He is Wu Ya himself!
Boom!
Liu Qian’s answer left the couple frozen in place,
Staring blankly ahead, as if paralyzed by a stroke.
