14. The House Was Burgled

Si Yun’s biological clock woke her, but she found the space beside her empty. She blinked, a strange emotion swelling briefly in her heart before fading away. She hurriedly changed clothes and freshened up—today was an important day.
Unexpectedly, as she was about to leave, she noticed a tall man curled up on the sofa. Her brows furrowed slightly.
Seeing the blanket slipping off him, Si Yun walked over and covered him again. She glanced at the scattered documents on the floor and table.
Though she couldn’t understand them, it was clear the man had been busy all night.
Young college students like him were rare these days.
Si Yun suddenly felt grateful that her judgment had been right.
“Smiling at me so early in the morning, so pleased with me?” Ji Hanxiao squinted, looking at the woman before him.
Si Yun was taken aback, then stood up.
“Are you pretending?”
“What?” Ji Hanxiao ruffled his hair, put on his glasses, and started working.
Watching his tousled hair, Si Yun felt a sudden dryness in her mouth, recalling the big dog she had raised at the orphanage as a child.
Ji Hanxiao’s hand froze mid-rub as he looked up. Si Yun felt awkward—she had just petted… a dog.
“Ahem.” Si Yun withdrew her hand and turned her face away awkwardly.
“Go back to your room and get some rest. Don’t catch a cold.”
Ji Hanxiao smiled.
“Okay.”
His obedience made Si Yun blush even more. She thought this college student might be doing it on purpose.
“Ji Hanxiao, you…”
“What about me?” Ji Hanxiao asked.
Si Yun’s face flushed deeper as she clicked her heels and turned away.
“Young man, don’t stay up late so often. Staying up late harms your health. I don’t want a weak little brother by my side.”
Having said that, she stretched her neck and left the house.
Ji Hanxiao smiled wryly. He looked down at himself, feeling he was being too hard on his own lower half. Just then, his phone rang urgently.
Ji Hanxiao checked the caller ID.
It was Xiao Bu.
It had only been three hours; this guy should be asleep.
“Hello?”
“Boss, something’s wrong!”
“…”

Si Yun had made a trip to a modest-looking law firm.
She went straight to an office upon entering.
“Miss Si, Old You still has a class. He won’t be back for another hour.”
“That’s fine.” Si Yun glanced at the time. Indeed, she had come too early.
An hour later, an elderly man returned, holding a book. His eyes brightened when he saw Si Yun.
“Little Si Yun? What brings you here today?”
“Grandpa You, I want to settle Grandma’s will.” Si Yun got straight to the point.
Old You paused his tea, then looked at Si Yun.
“Heh, got married?”
Si Yun nodded.
“Is it that kid from the Liang family?” Old You asked again. Si Yun sighed inwardly—Old You really had no interest in the gossip of Sucheng.
“No.”
“Oh, that’s good. Looks like your grandmother was farsighted. Bring the marriage certificate; I’ll handle it for you. But your husband must come too; he needs to provide a fingerprint.”
“Is it that troublesome?” Si Yun hadn’t expected this.
Old You laughed heartily.
“Little Si Yun, isn’t your grandmother’s dowry worth a fingerprint? He’s your husband—can’t he come?”
Si Yun felt guilty and shook her head. “Then I’ll bring him over another day.”
Just as Si Yun was about to leave,
“Little Si Yun, you should know, when it comes to inheritance, some things can’t be hidden.” Old You warned.
“I understand.” Si Yun replied.
“Just make sure you don’t disappoint your grandmother’s efforts.”
As Si Yun left the law firm, her mind was filled with her grandmother’s last words.
“You are the Si family’s child. There’s not much your grandmother can give you. The dowry house is your bridal property and the last thing you must guard for her.”
Si Yun was stunned.
She had never imagined her grandmother—the matriarch of the Si family—knew her true origins and only told her on her deathbed.
“Little Si Yun, once you marry, the dowry house belongs to you—not to the Si family’s daughter, but to you, Si Yun…”
The car’s horn interrupted her fragmented memories.
Si Yun wiped her face. The dowry house issue wouldn’t be too problematic. As long as she could bring Ji Hanxiao to see Old You, it should be fine. Ji Hanxiao was easy to persuade. A little compensation and a fingerprint wouldn’t be hard.
What was difficult was the exhibition. Could it really be held successfully?
Si Yun was about to drive to the dowry house when her phone rang.
“Yun Jie, something’s wrong…”
Meanwhile, in an office building,
Xiao Lan Technology’s belongings were being roughly thrown out. Ji Hanxiao saw his companions battling with the building’s security guards. They almost burst into tears when they saw him.
“Boss, they’re tossing our stuff without discrimination, many documents got damaged…”
“Boss, they said they won’t rent the place to us anymore?”
“Boss, are we in debt?”
“Boss, it’s that guy, Yue…”
Ji Hanxiao’s face hardened as he entered but was stopped by security.
“This is private property. Unauthorized people can’t enter.”
“This is my rented office.” Ji Hanxiao replied.

A man with slicked-back hair emerged.
“It used to be, but not anymore.” Saying that, he threw a document onto Ji Hanxiao, who quickly picked it up.
“This place isn’t rented anymore; it’s been sold. According to the lease contract, this is your compensation. Should be enough.”
A check fell as well.
One million—ten times the rent.
“What’s Yue trying to do?” Xiaoxiao spoke up.
Ji Hanxiao took a deep breath.
“We’ll move out immediately. But if you touch our stuff again, this check won’t be enough.” Ji Hanxiao said coldly.
The slick-haired man sneered, about to reply when Ji Hanxiao opened his phone.
“This is the patent we just obtained, recognized in Country A, supported and sponsored by several universities. Someone from Wall Street offered three hundred million for it. Do you want to sell?” Ji Hanxiao asked.
The slick-haired man’s smile froze as he looked at Ji Hanxiao’s phone, eyes filled with suspicion and fear.
But the next moment,
“A university student’s startup, you…”
“Since you don’t recognize it, call the police.” Ji Hanxiao didn’t wait to hear more and started to call. The slick-haired man immediately spoke.
“Let’s negotiate. We won’t touch your stuff anymore. You can take it.”
Half an hour later,
Five people stood on the street corner, carrying several large boxes.
“Boss, what do we do now?” Xiaoxiao asked.
“Isn’t there a million? We find another place.” Xiao Bu answered.
“No.” Ji Hanxiao replied.
“Why not?” The four younger ones were puzzled.
“Because no one will rent us a place. Even if they do, it’ll be like this again.”
“Ah? Is Yue crazy? Having money doesn’t mean you can act like this.”
“It’s not Yue Nanqiao.”
“Not Yue? Then who is it?” Guazi asked.
Ji Hanxiao’s mind flashed to the face of the person who fought him yesterday, and the Ning family’s representative. Whoever it was, they had influence in Sucheng.
“You guys take this money and book a decent hotel. I’ll deal with the office situation.” Saying this, he piled the boxes on Guazi and left, nearly exhausting him.
“Boss, wait…” Xiaoxiao barely had time to speak.
“What do we do if Sister Hong and Brother Bin come back and see we’ve been robbed?”
“Are you sure it wasn’t Yue Nanqiao?”
“I don’t know! If Yue Nanqiao is still this despicable, damn it, I want to beat him up now. It’s just money. If it weren’t for our boss back then, he…”
