Companionship
The school nurse was right beside me and hurried over when she heard my shout. Lingxuan opened her eyes and was then supported by the two of us, one on each side, into the temporary infirmary. After drinking two cups of oral rehydration salts, she bounced back to her usual lively self.
“You scared me to death,” I said, my heartbeat still recovering from running, suddenly spiking to 150 BPM from her scare.
“Ah… I didn’t expect October to be so hot. I guess I got a little heatstroke,” she replied.
“If you needed help getting to the infirmary, you could have just said so! Why make it sound like you suddenly dropped dead?”
“Ah… haha… I just couldn’t hold on,” she said apologetically, scratching her head with a smile.
“If it’s hot, don’t wear long sleeves.”
“I didn’t think it would be this hot,” she looked down, avoiding my gaze.
“Don’t scare me like that again,” I said softly, suddenly realizing my tone sounded almost like I was coaxing her.
“That’s not certain—you really did scream that loud,” she said mischievously, tilting her head to look at me.
“…”
“Sit for another ten minutes, then you can go back,” the nurse said.
I nodded, and we sat side by side on the peeling wooden bench in the temporary infirmary. Probably, the next event had already started; outside, the crowd’s cheers grew louder and louder, and the drumbeats of the march thundered through the speaker. Yet, separated only by a thin shelter, these sounds felt so distant.
“Still… didn’t die,” Lingxuan whispered.
“What?”
“Long-distance running… every time I finish, it feels like I’ve died once.”
“Well, who told you to push yourself so hard?” I tried to imagine what it felt like to sprint on the edge of heatstroke—something no normal person could do.
“But… the more painful it is, the more it stimulates the brain to release fascinating endorphins that act as natural painkillers. Being at death’s door and rising again—that’s the feeling,” she exhaled heavily. “So, pain makes me feel alive.”
I didn’t know what to say, so I tried to steer the conversation toward something lighter. “But you’re really amazing! Did you come in first or second? Any training tips?”
“Who cares? There’s nothing to brag about. I’m not good at team sports, don’t play ball games, and no one sits with me—like other girls do—chatting by the flowerbeds. I don’t talk much, I’m not interested in school gossip, and they don’t care why the number of spirals in a daisy’s disk follows the Fibonacci sequence. So I just run lap after lap on the track alone to pass the free time.”
So that’s how it was. Thinking back to her dazzling figure on the track, I now only felt a pang of sympathy.

We sat on the bleachers, gazing into the distance. The sky was a boundless blue, and all creatures competed freely under the frosty heavens.
The surrounding crowd was still noisy, but I felt as if something had truly changed.
“A bit boring… let’s go to the library!” she stretched lazily.
“Huh, the library? But the stadium gates are closed…”
“Follow me!” Lingxuan lightly jumped down the steps, climbed over the edge of the bleachers like a cat slipping through a barrier, then walked along the railing a few steps, pointing it out: the railing had a broken section forming a gap, and she slipped through sideways to the other side.

Passing through a stand of dawn redwoods, we arrived at the newly built school library. It was an elegant four-story building, half conference rooms, half library. Inside, it was very quiet; the woods muffled most noise, with only birdsong in the air. Few people were there, just a few teachers preparing lessons.
“The sanctuary of knowledge,” I whispered, unable to help myself despite having been here before.
When I was little, my parents were busy with work and didn’t feel safe leaving me alone at home, so they left me at the youth center or the library. I would walk between the shelves, scanning the dividers from A to Z. When I found an interesting book, I’d take it down and sit on the floor to read, munching on mint candies from my pocket. The library was like half my home. Even though many books were beyond my understanding, I loved being there.
Maybe because of this, I had a special attachment to books; whenever I visited a new place, my first instinct was to glance at the bookshelves. Lingxuan’s collection in the study room surprisingly matched my taste—I might borrow books from her in the future...
She confidently walked to the N-section shelves, stood on tiptoe to pull down a thick red book, then sat down between the shelves just like I did as a child, flipping to a certain page to read.

“Oh, I recently studied ecology in general biology, so I wanted to casually flip through the classic works of the old masters. Read half this morning, will continue this afternoon.” She noticed me and said this without looking up from the page.
